The President has become the ‘Wessanthara’ of the era due to his work towards the enactment of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, said Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva on Monday (27).
“No president wanted to abolish the executive powers of the President,” he said.
Siripala added that the implementation of the amendment is a timely requirement.
The observations were made at the Parliament during the second reading of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Central Committee unanimously decided to vote in favour of the 19th amendment on April 23.
However, earlier they asserted that the party would not comply with the government to pass the draft bill, if constitutional changes not take place for electoral reforms.
